He had ordered the meal in a smaller room at a smaller table than usual. Avis was never a fan of eating near Quetz and always seemed more comfortable when they had a very long strech of table between them. She was the same with anyone, holding just as much pride and vanity as her husband.

“But you do not like to dance. In fact, I remember you hated it.” Avis protested qietly, still doing as she was told and walking to the center of the room. She wore a long pale blue gown tonight, trimmed with black around the hem and bust. It had no sleeves (something that Quetzalcoatl had ordered) and she felt uncomfortable to say the least.
“But you enjoy dancing.” he said smothly, gliding across the floor. He took both of her hands and held them up, holding one tight and snaking his other hand around her waist. He then began to step, pulling her with him, in the Waltz - a dance he had learned in the mortal realm and Avis had begged him to teach to her.
“You have been very quiet these past few days, and I do not mean in speech. You don’t move. Your face is silent.” he said, teasing her. He knew exactly why she was so quiet and wanted her to say why.
“Grief.” she said quietly, watching their feet move as they swept around the room in silence. She had often enjoyed prcticing dancing with him, long ago. It had calmed her and despite his dislike of dancing, he would often indulge her if she was in his favour.
“Yes, well, there you go. Grief. You grieve for the wrong reasons, Avis. You should be glad you are rid of the Snake Queen. She is not to be considered an ally - you are safest here, are you not?”
He pulled her closed, chest pressed against hers and feet easily able to avoid hers.
“I said, some days ago, that an opportunity to prove your trustworthyness would arrise soon. The time draws closer, Avis. You should be eager to please me in the task set. The reward, if you should complete it correctly, will interest you greatly.” he whispered into her ear, spinning her around and lifting her light body off the floor for a second.
Avis gripped his shoulder tight in discomfort, allowing her body to be lifted and moved, before he set her down again and the dance continued. His breath was hot against her ear and made her skin crawl.
“What do you ask of me?” she asked, voice shaking as their dance began to slow.

ooc: never mind, off to bed in a few mins
Chrissy I’m guessing you feel asleep so no worries, seems tonight was doomed to be a very dead night.
Avis sat alone in her private chambers, brushing her hair.
She was only allowed in here to retrieve things or when Quetzalcoatl was being attended to by another lover, and otherwise she was to be at his side at all time. Thus, she was quite happy to be given this break and some time to herself. However, without Chrysomallus, she only felt alone and bored. Left to her own thoughts, guilt was quickly taking over, muating into self-pity which would only go away when she had to engage her mind in reluctant conversation with her husband…
As Quetzalcoatl conversed with his generals in another room furthur down the palace, Avis lay in her bath.
The tub was circular and deep. Many things about it upset her. It had been large enough for both herself and Chrysomallus. Mere feet away was her bed - the last tme Avis had lay in this bath, Chrysomallus was sat on that bed, visible from here, and they had chatted to each other. And now he was gone.
Her heart ached and she felt her chest convulse. Avis bit one of her knuckles hard, shaking and crying silently as she curled up in the water. He was dead, and now Avis was alone. She could not speak to Nina or any of her kind - it was too dangerous, and the Harpies and humans in the mortal realm were obviously off-bounds. Quetzalcoatl blamed her time in the mortal realm for her more independant behaviour, afterall.
Maybe, in time, she would find a reason to enjoy her life. She had to hope that if she did make an effort to return to the woman she was before, he would soften and treat her better. Maybe he might even grow to love her again, and maybe from that, she might in turn begin to like him more. Still, that was a long way off, and Avis knew she would suffer emotionally for a long time.
The room still smelled of Chrysomallus. His pillow; his side of the bed; the air itself held a painful reminder of his fate.
And it was her fault.
Rory sighed heavily through his nose and hissed slightly.
serpent-queen-nina:
“You have never purposly betrayed my mother, and as long as you do not do it. You are welcome to our plane.” he whispered before sliding out the window.
“I would not risk it. I just hope she does not hurt him as he has me.” she muttered in defeat, closing the window behind her and gliding to the bed, where she slipped under the light covers and sat up, smoothing her hair down and brushing it over her shoulders, waiting for her husband’s arrival.

“Go up to my chambers, you will have…” he looked away as if deep in thought “twenty minutes to yourself. Compose yourself before I come up, you will wait in the bed for me.”
Eyes downcast, Avis felt only a tiny part of her mind that suggested she refuse. The rest of…
Rory slithered to the window and tapped it with the tip of his tail.
Whimpering a few times as sobs tried to escape her, Avis placed the brush down and reached for a small cloth to wipe the tears from her face. She heard the tapping and turned to the window, suddenly frozen. Did Quetzalcoatl know the Snake was here? She dreaded to think what he might do if she spoke to the Snake without Quetzalcoatl’s permission. Her eyes darted to the door, which was silent and bore no indication that her husband was on his way yet, and then back to the window, particularily to its lock…
Rory tapped again on the window, he gave her a worried yet sad look.
Sniffing and wiping at her face again, Avis checked the door one last time before quickly gliding across the room, fumbling to open the lock on the window. She held it open only a few inches, incase she had to slam it shut quickly when Quetz arrived.
“You must tell Nina I am sorry that I have brought this upon her. I had never intended for him to go this far against her.” she whimpered to the Snake.
Rory pushed the window open enough to let his head and neck through. “My mother knew what it could bring our realm for hiding you. She is preparing for what could be a war.” Rory whispered.
“He plans war.” she nodded, pursing her lips for a moment as fresh tears streamed down her face. “Please warn her, he will attempt to attack around her. She, like him, is immortal, so making her his first target would not work. He will hurt others instead…” her mind drifted to Chrysomallus for a moment and she had to take a deep, shaky breath before continuing. “Quetzalcoatl breaks your mind before he even gets a chance to touch you. Please, tell her how sorry I am that I have brought this on her.”
”Oh he will have a hard time breaking us down, We have numbers and size on him.” Rory chuckled as his body squeezed into the room. “Our wills are strong and most of us are stubborn.” he added. “But what will become of you, Avis?”
“Quetzalcoatl has more numbers behind him than you think. His own form is much larger and more dangerous than his human or demon. He will do everything he can to take anything precious from her. He has already done that to me…” she trailed off, checking the door again. She was expected to be waiting in the bed and would not have much time to rush back. If the snake left, she could perhaps lie and say she’d wanted fresh air, but it was such a risk.
“My fate is similar to the one I faced when I first married him, although with a significant loss of love. I am his, and I am to do as I am told. I have nothing to allow me any other option. Perhaps in time he will soften and treat me better.” she forced a smile, clearly broken.
”Broken soul you are. Do you really think he will treat you any better. You will always be nothing more then a slave to him. I’d suggest leave and find a better spot to hide.”
“It will only bring more punishment to myself and those even vaguely associated with me. I have bonds with mortals, he would likely bring them here and kill them before me. I can only hope that if I do as he commands and please him, eventually he will at least treat me with a softer hand. I learned to live with it before, and I will again, when I have finished grieving.” she looked around again, clearly anxious. “But if he finds me here now, talking to you, or even if he sees the window open, he will be greatly displeased and it will benefit no one…”
Rory sighs and looks around. “What will you do if he slains us? Myself, my sisters…………” he whispered. “My baby sister is the most in danger…”
Avis placed her head in her hands before pushing them back and running her fingers through her hair.
“I know. I wish I had not brought Nina into this, but if I react in any way, it will only result in more suffering. I am to cut all ties her with her, so talking to you puts yourself and others in danger. I am truly sorry, I had not intended for any of this. It was such a wasted effort too, I cannot continue to escape him. Please, leave and tell your mother how sorry I am and warn her. Any and all close to her are potential victims.”
